Come And Grow With Us

Christmas and New Years has come and gone for another year. I hope everyone had a great time and are thankful. I know I sure am.
My family and I had a great time visiting, exchanging gifts, and a lot of shared laughter.

We had two happy people at the Chapter Christmas Party. The drawing was held and the lucky local winners received either a Quilt or a Marlin 22 Rifle. Dan Igou received a plaque for his service as past President for six years. Thanks Dan for an awesome job!

Bobby had a fantastic graduation in Mt. Vernon with seven members of the chapter joining with the celebration. He was happy and we are happy for him. Great job Bobby.

The plaques for Sheriff, City Police, and Fire Marshall are ready to be presented. Charlie is working on media coverage at the presentation. I will get back with you as to the presentation location.

August has been a busy month as were June and July. The fundraiser Westside WalMart was interesting as we shared the day with James River Assembly. Thanks to all the guys who showed up despite the rain. The next fundraiser is at the Golden Corral on September 10. So, don’t be shy, drop in and say hi! I went to a meeting this past week at our Monthly Task force with The Community Partnership meeting- Affordable Housing and Homeless Prevention. We talked about homeless vets and what the Task Force was doing to curb that problem. The meeting is the second Thursday of the month. If interested, drop me an email grizz.b8455@gmail.com.

Charles, Bill, and I meet with the United Way people for the United Day of Caring. This year, we were given shirts and caps to wear as we tackled building shelves.

I will travel to Washington D.C. to see the Wall and fly out on the 30th of August. I encourage all that can come out and support all the Vets that will be there. Last year I went as a Guardian for a Veteran and enjoyed the trip. This year, I will attend as a Veteran.

The Chapter meeting in August location has changed as we outgrew the Legion Lodge Post 639 meeting room. I know we really enjoyed meeting at the Post; but we need to think of the future. Join us for the first breakfast and meeting.

Jimmy’s Egg

This meeting is very special, as we will be giving away our last donated car. The former owners of the car, Denniese Dysart and Leslie Shannon will be our guests. The car donation was in recognition of his mother who was a nurse in WWII. Bobby Owens and his wife will also join us to receive the car.

The Veterans Day Parade is coming along great. If you want to get involved, send an email grizz.b8455@gmail.com. Everyone is welcome to join any of the projects.

I know that some of you will be busy with going back to school and everything. I encourage everyone to be safe and watch out for everyone even the little ones.

I’m going to quit being windy now so Susan can get this copied off for the Newsletter. If you haven’t visited the website, you really need to do so. It looks very nice. A Big Kudos to Corry and Jennifer for developing the Website http://www.springfieldveterans.org/. I better not leave Susan and Tom out as they have worked with Corey and Jennifer. You all have done a great job.

Until next time everyone take care and enjoy life to it’s fullest.

President’s Corner May – June 2016

What a beautiful day in the Ozarks! As I write, the area has gently falling rain. The gardens are growing and so is our Vietnam Veterans Chapter 952! We have an amazing group that works hard to provide for the families of Veterans. I am pleased everyone is happy with the events and new community interest. With continued community involvement and extending a welcome to all, there is renewed interest in membership. Veterans and family members attend every month to take a look and see at the organization

I had meetings everyday this week and I didn’t know if I was coming or going. But once I looked in the mirror, I knew my name was Harlan. HA!

The Chapter had a great fundraiser at Wal-Mart with time to visit many who stopped by the booth. The morning was slow; but by noon we were busy with new interests and donations. Overall, a good amount was contributed toward the Chapter goals of helping Homeless Veterans and families of Veterans in need. A big thanks to all the members and friends of the Chapter who stopped by to ‘hang-out’ and help with the day.

The Chapter Garage Sale is just around the corner on June 10,11 at Battlefield and Hwy. 65 – 3428 Blackman Avenue South, Springfield MO from 7 a.m. till dusk. Call Charles at 417-693-6298 or email Charles charhoppy59@gmail.com to pick-up larger items after May 15th.

The Day of Caring with the United Way will be August 18. If you are interested in helping a Veteran on the Day of Caring, email Charles. charhoppy59@gmail.com.

The Chapter is committed to the Veterans Day Parade in Springfield. It’s nice to have Robert Crampton, coordinator of the parade, and member of Chapter 952. Interested in helping? Email Robert robertcrampton91@gmail.com.

A reminder, the Will Daley Award is coming up soon. Please take time to nominate an outstanding member at the next meeting.

Charles, John, Sam, and I (Harlan) received special recognition by our State Attorney General Honorable Richard Kinder for the Chapters commitment to the Homeless Veteran project and outreach to Veterans and families in need.

There is so much we need to talk about during the up-coming meeting; I don’t know where to start. So be sure to attend and catch up on the latest happenings with the Chapter. Come And Grow With Us! Have a Great Summer.

President’s Corner March-April 2016

The ground hog didn’t see his shadow because of the beautiful weather lately. Thank God for that! It has made everyone to jump up and get to work.

I want to thank Charles and Sam for going to the Missouri State Counsel Meeting this past Saturday. We had a great and successful trip. Thanks Jim for driving us.

A funny thing happened to me at the last Ice Cream and Cookie night at LZ639. I filled in at the last moment to serve deserts and could not locate the cookies, ice cream, bowls, spoons, or a scoop. Oh man, was I a mess. Sam rescued me with cookies; but it was to late. I surely will do better the next time!

This year the Chapter added two new fundraising events:

1. A Garage Sale – June 10, 11 at Battlefield and Hwy. 65 – 3428 So. Blackman Ave. Springfield MO from 7 a.m. till dusk.

2. Walmart on Independence – Saturday MAY 7 from 9am until 5pm.

Charles works every Friday morning to Serve 200 Homeless Veterans at 806 N. Jefferson. Contact Charles to donate garage sale items, help for the day, or help with serving food. 417-693-6298 charhoppy59@gmail.com

Well elections are just around the corner for Chapter 952 as well as State. Three members have expressed an interest as an office holder. Please let me know if you are interested in a board position. Elections are March 26th.

The new website is a work in progress. Check it out! http://www.springfieldveterans.org

The Chapter is looking forward to a great 2016 with renewed projects, helps, fundraisers, and new membership. One of the ongoing Chapter goals is to work with all veterans from all wars and provide a home with the Chapter.

Letters of Appreciation

1. Sam Hudson received a letter from Peter Kinder as a Nominee for a Veteran office of Awards.

2. The Chapter received a letter from David Tibbles, owner of I Wannagetapizza and deeply touched by the Chapter’s focus and community giving. He related the action plan for the future to spread the word about the Chapter and services. David became an honorary member with the Chapter in November.
